Duties of a Forklift Driver
Forklift drivers typically are employed in warehouses and factories. Their job is to transport supplies and loads from one place to another. They should be taught to operate the forklift controls safely. Specialized training is a prerequisite. Drivers must have a background check and pass a drug test.
Performing Inspections
HRSDC and OSHA both require forklift operators to perform daily and pre-shift checks. Forklift operator training should comprise the proper performance of safety inspections to guarantee optimum functionality. An inspection must also be done at the end of each shift. Regular safety training must be undertaken each year.
Loading and Unloading
The forklift operator is tasked with the job of loading and unloading materials in a safe and timely manner. This responsibility also includes the organized stacking of materials so they are accessible.
Weighing Supplies
The responsibilities of a forklift driver could include weighing the materials which are being transported and recording the weights.
Quality Control
Forklift drivers are in charge of quality control. They must make sure that goods do not sustain damage during transportation inside the warehouse and orders are correct.
Safety Awareness
Forklift drivers must have great skills in both attention and awareness. Drivers have to be highly concerned with the safety of employees and pedestrians. The operator should find the safest way to deal with challenges, such as navigating a steep surface with a load. The driver would need to determine the route that is the safest. An operator's training will involve learning about the forces which can cause a forklift to tip over. The driver must be really familiar with the design and safety ratings of the forklift unit which they are operating. A forklift operator should be sensitive to the need for breaks to prevent exhaustion. Accidents connected to forklifts are more likely to take place when an operator is exhausted.

Forklift Engines
Forklifts are classed as small-engine vehicles. Forklift engines all follow the principles of internal combustion, while the numerous models and makes of forklift would have a different layout and design. Forklifts are made more toward generating high torque rather than for speed. They generally are geared to low speeds. The engine powers the drive wheels of the forklift. The engine is also needed to raise and lower the forks via a series of chain pulleys. Most forklift engines that are modern are powered by propane as they would be used for indoor applications, where diesel and gasoline engines would be unsuitable due to the exhaust they create.
A four-cylinder engine-block is normally found in a forklift. Much similar to the engine in small cars, the engines of the forklift have cylinders which contain pistons connecting to a camshaft. The head of each cylinder has an exhaust hatch, a spark plug and an exhaust hatch, each of them one-way and spring-loaded.
Engine Function
Propane passes through the opened throttle-plate in a fine spray, once the driver starts up the forklift engine. This fine spray mixes with air that comes from the mass air intake before moving into the head intake hatches of the cylinder. Each one of the four pistons is staggered to rise in a precise sequence, compressing the propane and air mixture as each piston rises to the top of the head. With extremely precise timing, the alternator and battery of the engine create an electrical current which passes through the spark plug. The fuel ignites resulting in an explosion which drives the piston back down to the bottom of the cylinder, causing a continuous turning of the camshaft. An air pressure imbalance in the cylinder causes the the exhaust hatch to draw out exhaust when more fuel passes into the cylinder. Propane burns cleaner compared to gasoline and diesel and the exhaust is not as harmful.
