Forklift Components in More Detail
A forklift is made of thousands of parts. The main components that make up a forklift truck are the frame of the truck, the engine components, the overhead guard, the tilt cylinders and the wheels. What's more, a forklift consists of different types of attachments. All the parts which make up a forklift are of equal importance because they work together to make the operation of the machinery possible. The next paragraphs describe in detail a few of the forklift components.
The Overhead Guard - this guard forms the lift truck's metal roof. It sits over the cab area and protects the machine operator while he or she is sitting and driving. The overhead guard makes sure that nothing falling from above onto the truck will harm the driver or damage the controls in the cab. The overhead guard is integral to the frame assembly on some units.
The Mast - Mounted either to the forklift frame or the front axle, the mast is the vertical lift truck component made of interlocking rails. The mast allows the forks to move upwards and down while providing lateral stability. The interlocking rails can either have rollers or bushings as guides. There are a couple of ways the mast can be operated: hydraulically by one or more hydraulic cylinders or chain operated with motive power provided by a hydraulic motor.
Forklift Carriage - The carriage is the component which the forks and different other types of attachments are mounted to. Actually, the carriage is directly attached to the hydraulic cylinder and is attached by chains. In order to allow the forks to be lowered and raised, the carriage can have either rollers or bushings to guide it in the interlocking mast rails.
Load Back Rest - a back rest is a metal rack which keeps a load from falling backwards when the carriage is lifted to its full height. The back rest is either welded or bolted on to the carriage.
Lift Truck Attachments - a range of attachments may be fixed to the front of the lift truck. The most common kind of attachment is forks. Moreover, there are rollers, rotators, L-shaped members, roll clamps, pole handlers and so on. These different kinds of attachments are useful for moving different types of loads.
